Dr. Ian Dunbar is a veterinarian, animal behaviorist, dog trainer, and writer. He received his veterinary degree and a special honors degree in physiology and biochemistry from the Royal Veterinary College at the University of London and a doctorate in animal behavior from the psychology department at the University of California at Berkeley, where he spent ten years researching olfactory communication, the development of hierarchical social behavior, and aggression in domestic dogs. Dr. Dunbar is a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, the California Veterinary Medical Association, the Sierra Veterinary Medical Association, and the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT), which he founded in 1993. For over seven years, Dr. Dunbar wrote the American Kennel Club Gazette’s behavior column, which was voted Best Dog Column for a number of years in succession by the Dog Writers Association of America. He has written numerous books, including Before and After Getting Your Puppy, How to Teach a New Dog Old Tricks, and Dr. Dunbar’s Good Little Dog Book. Dr. Dunbar has been lecturing to veterinarians, dog trainers, dog professionals, and dog owners since the 1970s. In 1982, Dunbar founded SIRIUS® Puppy Training, which featured the first off-leash puppy socialization and training classes in the world. Dr. Dunbar’s techniques completely changed the way dogs are trained. His unique lure/reward, off-leash training techniques provided a delightful alternative to on-leash training.
